Our academy was formed in 2008 with the following objectives:
- Provide an environment for children of all ages and from all backgrounds to play cricket, with the emphasis first and foremost on enjoyment and fun
- To teach the basics of cricket technique and the spirit of cricket to all children within the Academy
- To provide competitive cricket for those who are interested, but to be mindful of point 1 at all times.
- To provide a progression through to senior cricket at G&S CC.
From a handful of children in 2008 our numbers have grown considerably and we now have over 80 children registered with the Academy. Sunday mornings in the summer have quickly become a regular fixture, not only for the Academy kids, but for parents and siblings too. We are regularly told what a relaxed, friendly, atmosphere we have at Academy mornings, which is a reflection on the club as a whole.
2010 sees our older Academy members (Under 15’s) enter league cricket for the first time, which is a significant move forward in progressing our Academy players towards senior cricket. Competitive/league cricket is planned for other age groups, with inter-Academy & friendly fixtures in 2010 for those that are interested.
We’re always looking for parents who want to get more involved with the Academy, as our increased Academy numbers mean more help is needed. If you’re interested please contact us.
Academy Update
The indoor coaching clinics for the under 15's and ladies sections have come to an end. They have run for 8 weeks at the West Bridgford Comprehensive School and have been a huge success.
We have focused on the basics for batting, bowling and fielding and have seen a steady progression with all members of the group - we have had new recruits who have no cricket experience showing huge improvement and existing players doing the same.
I would like to thank Gerry and Alex who have given up their time to assist me with these sessions and the feedback from the groups has been very positive, however, this is only the beginning!
The outdoor sessions commence on Sunday 2nd May for all the academy and ladies and we will be building on the hard work done during the Winter with a view to getting the under 15's ready for the forthcoming league season and ladies ready for the festival that we plan to have at Regatta Way later in the Summer - further details to follow in due course.
I would encourage all members of the club, senior or otherwise, to utilise the coaching staff we now have at the club - it is never too late to learn or improve your game!
