Chairman's Report for the 2012 Season
What a miserable season we have had with the weather which has cost nearly all of our teams half of their fixtures. This in turn has had a huge impact on our finances with not being able to let out the pitches particularly in the evenings and weekends and we have not been able to generate as much revenue from the subs and bar as we would normally expect to do so consequently we are many thousands of pounds down this season. This has not been helped by the fact that Wilsons Cricket Club have given up any involvement with the ground and so it has fallen on us to pay double our normal rent and with so many matches called off the income has been well down but our costs well up. We have got to have a massive effort next season to try and bring as much income into the club as we can because another season like this last one would see us in dire straits so I am asking all members to do everything they can to support all social events and activities as well as paying their subscriptions on time.
The playing side of the club has again been somewhat disappointing as the 1st team have again been relegated although credit must be given to Steve Carmody for all his efforts in putting out a team for each game. Unfortunately most of the games played were against the teams finishing high up the league and when we were due to play other clubs at the bottom guess what “it rained” so were called off. Jon Potter did well again for the 2nd team and although he had many late calls from the 1st team for players he still managed to achieve a very creditable position in the league. The 3rd team were under pressure for most of the season due to lack of players or their availability and had to cancel some matches which resulted in a loss of points so they in turn finished bottom of their league. Again credit must be given to both Rob Sin and Paul Williams for playing as many games as they did often with many of our young academy players. Paul also did a great job with the Sunday team who had a very good first season in the Newark League. Our ladies continue to go from strength to strength with both their improvement and total commitment in everything they do. They have been self supporting all season and it has been a joy to see them enjoying themselves in both playing and being heavily involved in the social events.
The Academy has also continued to show great improvement which has been due so much to the efforts of the coaching staff who continue to give up a lot of their spare time and I know you all will join with me in thanking each and everyone of them for the way they are hopefully bringing on the future of this club. I am sure Steph must have squatters rights at the clubhouse as she seems to spend so much time down there and once again along with Caroline has continued to look after everyone with the great spreads put on at each match or social event. Not content with doing the food and drink both Steph and Caroline have been carrying out the cleaning and I know we have all noticed a huge difference in the cleanliness of the place so a big big thankyou to both of them.
There are so many people to thank starting with your committee who continue to do as much as they can to keep this club running on the right lines and without their input and help my job as chairman would be a lot more difficult and I want everyone to know how involved and committed they are in doing the best for this cricket club. The following have again done brilliant work this season and we all need to thank Geoff Clay and Pat Carmody for their tireless work in preparing not only one wicket but two and many hours have been spent getting squares ready only for it to rain either on Friday or Saturday so all the work had to be done again the following week. Thanks again to Peter Guest for all his efforts in trying to arrange and play matches and I am sure he is looking forward to a much better time next season. Mike Turner continues to give his unpaid umpiring services every week and for this we are truly thankful. I am sure your treasurer John Gell has had a nightmare time with the finances (or should I say lack of ) and this will have been a very difficult season for him to try and balance the books and I know he will have to give us a very gloomy picture at the AGM and again our thanks to him for all his time and effort. I know I have already mentioned Steph but both hers and Steves contribution to the running of this club have been immense and I don’t know what we would do without them. Once again massive thanks to your coaching staff who have been brilliant and this has shown in the big big improvement in our younger players. We are continuing to look forward and are putting more people through coaching courses which can only benefit the club in the future Thanks to Greg for his work on the Web site and to Matt Lawrence and John Gell for all their work on CLUBMARK and we have now received confirmation that we have been accredited with Clubmark which is a huge feather in our cap.
My thanks go again to our sponsors who continue to support us and without their help we would really struggle even further. Please do your utmost to try and persuade people or companies to sponsor us no matter how large or small their contribution may be.
We shall shortly be advising you of the date of our Annual General Meeting where discussions over our third team, ground sharing, new players and finances will be discussed and I would urge all of you to try and attend in order to continue going forward.
